PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
MHM led the thoughtful renovation of the historic YWCA building in downtown Knoxville, a cherished community landmark originally constructed in 1925. Woven into the fabric of downtown for over a century, the building has long served as a symbol of refuge, opportunity, and support for generations of women. After decades of continuous use, the five-story facility required comprehensive modernization to continue supporting the YWCA’s Jenny Boyd Keys of Hope residential program while preserving its historic character and civic presence.

The once-in-a-generation renovation of the 43,200 SF structure carefully balanced preservation with transformation, integrating new mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, electrical, lighting, IT, life-safety, and security systems throughout. Exterior restoration included extensive masonry repair and tuck-pointing, historically appropriate replacement windows, restoration of the original entry doors and pediment, and reconstruction of the deteriorated gracefully curving staircase along Walnut Street in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.

Inside, the project revitalized historic gathering spaces, including the lobby, multipurpose rooms, and gymnasium, while reimagining the upper floors to provide safe, modern residential accommodations. New offices, community spaces, and accessibility improvements were thoughtfully incorporated to better serve residents, staff, and visitors alike.

Today, the renewed facility stands as both a preserved landmark and an enduring part of downtown Knoxville’s identity, reinforcing the historic and social fabric of the city. Most importantly, the revitalized building ensures the YWCA can continue providing a welcoming and dignified home for women in need while carrying forward its mission of empowerment, justice, dignity, and hope for generations to come.
