We’re excited to share that two MHM projects received Outstanding Project Awards in Learning By Design Magazine’s Fall 2026 issue of the Architecture and Interior Design Awards of Excellence.
Lees-McRae College’s Historic Commons was recognized in the Renovation/Addition | Historic Preservation category, while the University of Tennessee’s UT Medical Nursing Building, designed in collaboration with Ayers Saint Gross Architecture, PC, received recognition in the New Construction | Entire Building category.
Entries in the Fall 2026 awards program were evaluated through a peer-review process conducted by a jury of experienced education design professionals. All projects were assessed across six criteria: Design Challenges and Innovation; Sustainability and Social Impact; Interior Architecture/Design; Next Generation Learning; Functional Design/Effective Space Planning; and Community Needs. The jury evaluated each submission based on its overall merit, distinctive qualities, and the successful implementation of architectural design and planning concepts.
Designed by McCarty Holsaple McCarty, Inc., in collaboration with Ayers Saint Gross Architecture, PC, the UT Medical Nursing Building creates a dynamic environment for the next generation of healthcare professionals. Combining flexible learning spaces, advanced educational resources, and a design inspired by its natural surroundings, the building supports evolving approaches to nursing education while fostering collaboration and connection.
"Flexibility is a clear design driver, with tiered lecture halls, active learning classrooms, multipurpose spaces, and strong CTE environments that can adapt to evolving teaching methods and class sizes. The exterior thoughtfully connects to its wooded setting through green panels, while wood ceilings, mountain-inspired graphics, and strategic color create a cohesive sense of place."

The transformation of Lees-McRae College's Historic Commons in Banner Elk, North Carolina, brings renewed purpose to a collection of historic campus buildings. Through thoughtful preservation and modernization, MHM helped reimagine these spaces as a vibrant center for student life, bringing together residential, academic, and gathering environments while celebrating the architectural character and history of the campus.
"The College renovated its Historic Commons- the campus's main welcome point, housing offices, classrooms, event spaces, a media room, dining hall, roof deck, and student housing. The clear site plan and before-and-after photos captured the renovation's scale. The reclaimed historic space balances modern updates with character well. The preservation strategy is equally strong: historical research and coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office restore original character while integrating modern systems, accessibility, and amenities."
