PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
As a Design-Build partner with Rouse Construction, MHM designed the 145,000 s.f. Gibbs Middle School in northeast Knox County. The client asked the design team to creatively apply Knox County’s School Building Standards and deliver a turn-key facility to the county within a guaranteed maximum price contract.

The building is located on a 25-acre site behind the existing Gibbs Elementary School and is oriented to maximize solar exposure on its east/west axis. The site circulation design intent was to separate bus and auto traffic patterns while utilizing the elementary school driveways in off-hours.

The school is designed primarily as two buildings. The core services building houses administration, a cafeteria, a gymnasium, an auditorium, and a media center. The media center connects to the classroom/academic building that contains 38 classrooms, the CDC program, and the art program. Designed as a one-to-one school, the facility accommodates a state-of-the-art technology infrastructure.
