Gibbs Middle School

Knoxville, TN

149,000 SF

MHM, as a Design Build partner with Rouse Construction, has designed the new 145,000 sf Gibbs Middle School in northeast Knox County. The team was asked to creatively apply Knox County’s school building standards and deliver a turn-key facility to the County within a Guaranteed Maximum Price contract.

The building is sited on a twenty five-acre site behind the existing Gibbs Elementary School and is oriented to maximize the solar exposure on its east/west axis.  Site circulation has been carefully designed to separate bus and auto traffic patterns and utilize the elementary school driveways in off-hours.

The school is designed primarily as two buildings; the core services building which houses administration, cafeteria, gymnasium, auditorium and media center is connected to the classroom/academic building which contains 38 classrooms, the CDC program and the art program.  Designed as a one-to-one school, the facility contains state-of-the-art technology infrastructure.  The project opens its doors in 2018.
