MHM was honored to join YWCA Knoxville & the Tennessee Valley, community leaders, project partners, and supporters to celebrate the reopening of the newly renovated YWCA Nancy J. Land Center in downtown Knoxville.
Originally constructed in 1925, the historic building at 420 W. Clinch Avenue has served generations of women in East Tennessee for more than a century. The extensive renovation preserves that legacy while preparing the facility for its next chapter, creating a more accessible, efficient, and welcoming environment to support the YWCA’s mission and the women it serves.
The renovation included significant upgrades to the building’s electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and HVAC systems, along with energy-efficient windows and roofing and improved ADA accessibility. Throughout the building, the design balances these modern improvements with the preservation of historic features and character. Reconfigured interiors provide updated resident rooms, common areas, meeting and therapy spaces, offices, a kitchen and dining room, computer lab, clothing boutique, and other resources, while the former gymnasium has been reimagined as a flexible community and event space.
Most importantly, the renewed facility expands the YWCA’s ability to serve the community. The building is home to the Jenny Boyd Keys of Hope Program for Women, which provides housing and wraparound services for women working toward stability and self-sufficiency. The renovation increases residential capacity from 58 to 70 women while helping the program provide services to more than 200 women each year.
For MHM, the project represents the kind of historic preservation that looks both backward and forward—respecting a building that has been part of downtown Knoxville for 100 years while adapting it to better serve its community for generations to come.
Seeing the Nancy J. Land Center reopen its doors was an especially meaningful milestone for our team, and we’re proud to have helped give new life to a place that continues to provide safety, opportunity, and support in the heart of Knoxville.
