PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
MHM partnered with the Helen Ross McNabb Center to renovate and convert a former ambulatory surgery center into Tennessee’s first Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment, and Healing (EmPATH) unit, providing 24/7 access to behavioral health services. The project involved a comprehensive interior reconfiguration to support a new clinical model, including walk-in triage, exam rooms, intake and observation areas, and a large open milieu designed to balance patient independence with staff visibility.
The design prioritizes clear patient and staff flow, with a reimagined entrance sequence and thoughtfully organized circulation that supports efficient intake, evaluation, and treatment while maintaining privacy, safety, and accessibility. MHM coordinated significant upgrades to mechanical, electrical, lighting, and life safety systems to support the new use, addressing aging infrastructure and integrating modern systems within the existing facility. The project also included new flooring, ceilings, and wall treatments, utilizing a simple, calming finish palette with natural textures to support a therapeutic environment.
The open milieu space incorporates comfortable recliners and leverages the building’s existing double-height volume and oversized windows to introduce natural light, creating a welcoming, non-institutional setting. Delivered within an existing facility, the project required careful coordination of building systems, code compliance, and phased implementation. The resulting environment supports efficient clinical workflows while enhancing patient comfort and well-being.
Exterior improvements included a new primary entry vestibule and canopy, targeted façade and roof repairs, enhanced daylighting through strategic window modifications, and site and landscape upgrades to create a clear, welcoming point of arrival.
