The renovation of the Visitor Center at Ijams Nature Center offers the opportunity for the growth and evolution of one of Knoxville's most cherished non-profit organizations, honoring its founding principles while embracing growth and innovation. Rooted in a legacy partnership between MHM, Ross/Fowler, and Ijams Nature Center, this endeavor is built upon a respect for the character of the surrounding environment and a loyal commitment to blend the interaction between education and the natural world.

The programmatic expansion of the Visitor Center introduces new multi-functional classrooms and a covered exterior education space adjacent to an indoor/outdoor animal shelter. By supplementing office space with communal areas tailored for volunteers, the Visitor Center becomes a hub of community engagement, empowering residents to actively participate in the diverse educational programs offered by Ijams Nature Center.

In addition to these enhancements, an expanded gift shop complements a new café space designed to diversify revenue streams and elevate the Visitor Center into a destination rather than a point of transition. This strategic approach not only enhances public visibility but also transforms the Visitor Center into a vibrant center of activity, fostering a sense of belonging within the community.
