Due to a rapidly expanding population, Cumberland County, Tennessee needed to replace a 30 year old facility that was too small and technologically outdated. The county hired MHM to provide full architectural design services, including site selection assistance and programming.
The proposed building site is in the heart of downtown Crossville, two blocks from the county courthouse and presents an opportunity to create a “governmental square” to help consolidate county functions and services. This concept will help organize and beautify a six-block area of downtown Crossville, as well as create a strong civic identity for the area.
The new library will be a two-story building, clad in crab-orchard stone and brick, with its main entrance on axis to the county courthouse. Patrons will be treated to a large, two story atrium in the center of the building and a grand, monumental stair leading up to the main reading rooms on the second floor. The children’s area is being designed around a county fair theme and a small café/coffee shop will entice teens and young adults to visit the library as well.
The project is scheduled to begin construction in the summer of 2008.
