The Bank of America Building (formerly NationsBank Center and originally Sovran Center) is a nine-story office building and parking structure. NationsBank's downtown Knoxville office occupies the entry level and second floor; on the upper floors, the tenants are primarily professional firms.
The 105,000-square-foot office building is set back from Main Street on a raised landscaped platform. This is consistent in design with the neighboring First Baptist Church, as well as with the City-County Building and Old Court House to the east. Setbacks on the building's northeast facade reduce its mass and maintain views to the church. The office tower is enclosed in floor-to-ceiling glass and warm-toned brick. The color of the brick complements both the church and the Medical Arts Building located across the street.
Structurally, the facility combines the long-span steel floor system of the office building with the column-free precast concrete structural system of the garage. The City of Knoxville owns the 470-car parking garage and provided air rights to a private developer for the construction of the office building.
